Kelsey Armeni's (Cultural Anthropology, PhD in Progress) co-authored paper published in BMJ Open with the People, Place, and Health Collective at Brown University School of Public Health. This protocol paper was published for a clinical trial comparing the effectiveness of a high (24 mg) vs standard (16 mg) maintenance daily dose of buprenorphine for opioid use disorder in the era of fentanyl in the unregulated drug supply.

Abstract

Introduction Buprenorphine is a highly effective treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD). However, provider observations and preliminary research suggest that the current standard maintenance dose may be insufficient for suppressing withdrawal and preventing cravings among people who use or have used fentanyl. Buprenorphine dosing guidelines were based on studies among people who use heroin and have not been formally re-evaluated since fentanyl became predominant in the unregulated drug supply. We aim to compare the effectiveness of a high (24 mg) vs standard (16 mg) maintenance daily dose of buprenorphine for improving retention in treatment, decreasing the use of non-prescribed opioids, preventing cravings and reducing opioid overdose risk in patients.

Kevin Darcy successfully defended his dissertation, "An Ethnography of Disability in Academia: Stories of Crip Time, Cripping Independence and the Cognitive Load of Disability." Kevin examines the experiences of people with disabilities in academia. It is oriented autoethnographically by Kevin's own experiences, and those of other students and babyֱ��app, to make vivid the phenomenological realities of living on crip time, navigating independence, the cognitive load of disability, and disclosure management. Arielle Milkman successfully defended her dissertation, "Between Crisis and Coordination: Wildfire Response, Mobility and Well-being in the American West." Her work considers the expertise, skilled work and mobility of contract wildland firefighters, including farmworkers, forestry guest workers, construction workers and others who travel to the Pacific Northwest and then around the country each fire season to address lengthening fire seasons. Arielle's committee is Professor Kate Goldfarb (chair), Professor Donna Goldstein, Professor Jerry Jacka, Professor Jen Shannon, and Professor Jason De León (UCLA Anthropology).

Professor Carla Jones publishes, "Style on Trial: The Gendered Aesthetics of Appearance, Corruption, and Piety in Indonesia" in the latest issue of Comparative Studies in Society and History published on line by Cambridge University Press.

Abstract

In the two decades since the end of Suharto regime in Indonesia, two apparently distinct public industries have emerged in tandem: gendered forms of religious style, glossed as modest fashion, and legal efforts to hold citizens accountable for theft, glossed as corruption. Many of the most high-profile anti-corruption cases in the past decade have brought these two fields into semiotic interaction, as female defendants increasingly deploy forms of facial cover associated with extreme religious piety to signal humility and shame when appearing in court, in the process complicating the relationship between religious semiotics and criminality. Analyzing how and why these two genres of political communication have intersected in the past decade, and to what effects, requires situating these shifts in the context of dense aesthetic archives in which the spectacularity inherent to fashion resonates with the unique impulses of a post-authoritarian political landscape in which uncovering secrets is especially alluring. I argue that the hermeneutic impulses motivating popular fascination with criminal style, often circulated via social media, open new analyses of the ethical relationship between beauty and justice. Building on the scholarship on transparency and on the human face, I argue that putting gendered religious style at the center of the analytical frame—from religious self-fashioning to court appearances, and as forms of political protest—reveals the ethical impulses behind seeing and being seen, and the faciality of scandal.

Professor Carole McGranahan's latest article, "Things Not Revealed: A Redacted Ethnography of the CIA" published in Redacted: Writing in the Negative Space of the State, edited by Lisa Min, Franck Bille, and Charlene Makley (Punctum Books).

Redacted: Writing in the Negative Space of the State brings together essays, poems, artwork, and memes – a bricolage of media that conveys the experience of living in state-inflected worlds in flux. Critically and poetically engaging with redaction in politically charged contexts (from the United States and Denmark to Russia, China, and North Korea), the volume closely examines and turns loose this disquieting mark of state power, aiming to trouble the liberal imaginaries that configure the political as a left–right spectrum, as populism and nationalism versus global and transnational cosmopolitanism, as east versus west, authoritarianism versus democracy, good versus evil, or the state versus the people – age-old coordinates that no longer make sense. Because we know from the upheavals of the past decade that these relations are being reconfigured in novel, recursive, and unrecognizable ways, the consequences of which are perplexing and ever evolving.

This book takes up redaction as a vital form in this new political reality. Contributors both critically engage with statist redaction practices and also explore its alluring and ambivalent forms, as experimental practices that open up new dialogic possibilities in navigating and conveying the stakes of political encounters.
