Inside Opt Out community forum on April 5 to explore opting out of testing
With testing season underway, parents, teachers, students, and community members are invited to join a community conversation about opting out of standardized testing on Wednesday, April 5 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the CU Boulder Sustainability, Energy and Environment Complex, room C120, 4001 Discovery Drive ().
We will explore what is gained and what is lost when choosing to opt out of standardized tests in a community dialogue hosted by the CU Boulder School of Education and the Office for Outreach and Engagement.
The event will begin with brief remarks from panelists followed by a community dialogue investigating questions such as: What are the connections between testing, parents' rights and educational opportunity? How might testing be balanced with other educational goals and values? What effects might parents and children consider when discussing opt out? How do the new PARCC exams compare with previous tests? What questions do tests enable us to ask and answer? What are the possible harms or trade-offs of testing? What are the alternatives?
With an introduction by Terri Wilson, Assistant Professor of Educational Foundations, Policy and Practice, the panel will include:

- Derek Briggs, Director of the Center for Assessment, Design, Research and Evaluation
- Allison Atteberry, Assistant Professor of Research and Evaluation Methodology
- Alison Boardman, BVSD parent

A Q&A will follow, moderated by Michele Moses, Professor of Educational Foundations, Policy and Practice.
