Meredith is one of forty recipients of a 2017-2018 American Association of University Women (AAUW) American Dissertation Fellowship. Recipients are selected on the basis of scholarly excellence, quality and originality of project design, and active commitment to helping women and girls through service in their communities, professions, or fields of research. Meredith DeBoom’s research analyzes how rising Chinese investment influences the multiscalar politics of resource extraction, development, and state building in Namibia. Her investigation of how place-based identities and (geo)politics shape citizens’ perceptions of mining will help address mining-associated conflict and inequality. A first-generation college student, she also mentors students from historically underrepresented backgrounds.

This course focuses on the international and cross-national perspectives of political geography. It deals with political, babyֱ��app and social aspects of international relations from a geographical perspective and examines the post Cold War and post 9-11 world. As such, the course has an integrative character and requires basic knowledge about international affairs. Frequent reading of a substantive newspaper or magazine, such as The New York Times, The Guardian, Christian Science Monitor, the Economist or the BBC News webpage (news.bbc.co.uk) would help significantly to acquire (or develop) knowledge of global locations and current events.

The course is designed for the upper-division level. It surveys some important aspects of the discipline of political geography but does not engage in a systematic survey of regional issues and conflicts. Instead, case studies of contemporary developments, including the role of nationalism in global South states, the geopolitics of rising powers like China and India, and the causes of environmental and natural resource conflicts in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, are used to illustrate key concepts from the lectures and readings.

Meredith has been named a Philanthropic Education Organization (P.E.O.) Evelyn K. Aitken Named Scholar. The P.E.O. Scholar Awards (PSA) were established in 1991 to provide substantial merit-based awards for women pursuing doctoral degrees in the U.S. and Canada. Of the 85 doctoral students selected as P.E.O. Scholars in 2015, the 13 most outstanding scholars were chosen for named or endowed awards. The $15,000 Evelyn K. Aitken Named Scholar Award will support Meredith's dissertation research on the politics and geopolitics of natural resource extraction and governance in Namibia.
