Please see the full solicitation for complete information about the funding opportunity. Below is a summary assembled by the Research & Innovation Office (RIO).

Program Summary

The DOE SC program in Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) hereby announces its interest in basic research in the design, development, analysis, and scalability of randomized algorithms for the challenging discrete and combinatorial problems that arise in the Department’s energy, environmental, and national security mission areas.

The overarching goal of randomized algorithms research, under this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), is to find scalable ways to sample, organize, search, or analyze very large data streams, discrete structures, and combinatorial problems relevant to DOE mission areas. The five research topics of interest focus on algorithms for discrete and combinatorial problems as highlighted in the RASC workshop report:

  1. Randomized algorithms for discrete problems that cannot be modeled as networks
  2. Randomized algorithms for solving well-defined problems on networks
  3. Universal sketching and sampling on discrete data
  4. Randomized algorithms for combinatorial and discrete optimization
  5. Randomized algorithms for machine learning on networks

Deadlines

CU Internal Deadline: 11:59pm MST May 2, 2022

DOE Pre-Application Deadline: 3:00pm MST May 19, 2022

DOE Application Deadline: 9:59pm MST June 30, 2022

Internal Application Requirements (all in PDF format)

  • Project Summary (1 page maximum): Provide the name of the applicant, the project title, the PI and the PI’s institutional affiliation, any coinvestigators (including any unfunded collaborators) and their institutional affiliations, the objectives of the project, a description of the project, including methods to be employed, and the potential impact of the project (i.e., benefits, outcomes).
  • Lead PI Curriculum Vitae
  • Budget Overview (1 page maximum): A basic budget outlining project costs is sufficient; detailed OCG budgets are not required.

Eligibility

Non-DOE/NNSA FFRDCs are eligible to submit applications under this FOA and may be proposed as subrecipients under another organization’s application. If recommended for funding as a lead applicant, funding will be provided through an interagency agreement to the FFRDC’s sponsoring Federal Agency. If recommended for funding as a proposed subrecipient, the value of the proposed subaward may be removed from the prime applicant’s award and may be provided through an Inter-Agency Award to the FFRDC’s sponsoring Federal Agency.

Limited Submission Guidelines

No more than two pre-applications or applications as the lead institution in a single- or muti-institutional team. No more than one pre-application or application for each PI at the applicant institution.

Award Information

Ceiling: Approximately $800,000 per year

Floor: Approximately $400,000 per year

Between four (4) and nine (9) awards are expected.
