Exploring A Non-Western Culture: Regional Cultures of Africa
This course will explore a small number of cultures鈥攁nd as much as possible, 鈥渢ravel like an anthropologist鈥 in African regions where Laura DeLuca has lived and done field work: Tanzania, South Africa, and Sudan. Students will learn about issues such as South African apartheid and explore contemporary issues through film clips such as 鈥淢andela: A Long Walk to Freedom,鈥 and Trevor Noah鈥檚 new book, Born a Crime. Class participation, book analyses, and group presentations are the main assignments. Students will select an African country to learn about in greater detail for the final project.听
