Campus Dining Services and the University Memorial Center are excited to welcome a Starbucks in the UMC, slated to open late spring 2016. The Starbucks will be located in the current Baby Doe’s location.
A rebranded version of Baby Doe’s will be moved inside the Alferd Packer Grill. In addition, the UMC Market will open in the West Dining Room to provide the grab-and-go snacks, beverages and meals for the campus and community. It will be located next to the Ink Spot and is expected to open mid-November.
“I am excited that the UMC will be the home of Starbucks on this campus,” said Carlos García, UMC executive director. “We know it is a draw for students, staff and babyֱapp alike and we expect it to be a very popular stop for people.”
The student-run UMC Board approved the Starbucks concept in fall 2014 and the UMC began conversations to open a location soon after.
“I'm so excited for students to have such a prominent coffee brand at their fingertips and my classmates are pumped to have Starbucks on campus,” said Emily Breidt, UMC Board chair. “The UMC Board also feels that a UMC Starbucks would benefit the campus community and will provide convenient relief for caffeine-seeking students.”
The build out is expected to begin in early 2016. The Starbucks will open where the current Baby Doe’s is located on the first floor of the UMC. It will sell Starbucks’ selection of coffee, tea and food generally found in Starbucks stores.
“We have started to work with the architect on the plans, and the space will be great,” said Amy Beckstrom, Campus Dining Services director. “It will have the look and feel of Starbucks, and it will fit into the culture and dynamic of the UMC.”
The Starbucks and the UMC Market will be managed by Campus Dining Services, a Housing & Dining Services department. CDS now manages the Alferd Packer Grill and Baby Doe’s and oversees the private food vendors located in the UMC. CDS is also responsible for the residence hall dining operations throughout campus.
