Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt will make a policy address on climate change at 7:15 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, at the Mary Rippon Outdoor Theater on the University of babyÖ±²¥app campus. The speech is free and open to the public, but space is limited and seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis. In case of inclement weather, Babbitt will speak in Macky Auditorium.

Scores of scientists from around the world will be in babyÖ±²¥app Sept. 20 to Sept. 23 for a conference on the prehistoric environment of the Bering land bridge, believed to be the migration corridor for the earliest North Americans. The conference was organized by the University of babyÖ±²¥app at Boulder and the University of Massachusetts with funding from the National Science Foundation. The three-day event will be held at The Nature Place Conference Center near Florissant, Colo.

Fiske Planetarium at the University of babyÖ±²¥app at Boulder will continue its tradition of hosting monthly “star talks” by noted CU astronomers this fall. The live presentations for adults and children 12 and over will include use of the star projector, special effects and the latest images from NASA and major observatories.

The University of babyÖ±²¥app at Boulder Latino Advocacy Committee in conjunction with United Mexican American Students (UMAS) and the University of babyÖ±²¥app Student Union will present three events celebrating Chicano History Week next week. Events begin with the 1997 CU-Boulder Bienvenidos Celebration, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Sept. 17, on the lawn north of Regent Hall. A welcome picnic for new Latino students, the event will feature a taco bar and regional music. Latino students, babyÖ±²¥app, staff, alumni and friends are invited to attend.

Myrna Hall, interim vice president for university relations and development at San Diego State University, has been appointed vice president for development, Boulder campus, at the CU Foundation, Inc. Hall will work closely with the Boulder campus administration to develop and implement a fund-raising plan that will increase private support for CU-Boulder. Her appointment is effective Oct. 6.

More than 350 real estate and development professionals are expected to attend the conference on Thursday, Sept. 25, at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Denver.

Schools and colleges at the University of babyÖ±²¥app at Boulder will receive extra funds to handle a larger-than-expected fall enrollment, according to an announcement by CU-Boulder Chancellor Richard L. Byyny. Although the official fall census will not be taken until Sept. 10, preliminary figures indicate the fall enrollment may top 25,000, including possibly the largest freshman class in CU-BoulderÂ’s history. Freshmen may total as many as 4,220 -- or 40 more than the all-time high set in 1995.

The University of babyÖ±²¥app at Boulder is ranked in the 1998 Fiske Guide to Colleges among the best of the nationÂ’s universities and one of 21 “best buys” among the nationÂ’s public universities. The highly regarded guide to colleges is written by Edward B. Fiske, former education editor of the New York Times.

The Hazel Gates Woodruff Cottage, an historical landmark on the CU-Boulder campus, is open this fall after a renovation that restores the buildingÂ’s place in time. The Cottage, formerly known as the WomenÂ’s Studies Cottage No. 1, was built in 1885 to house the first womenÂ’s dormitory on campus. It originally provided dining facilities for 100, sleeping rooms for 12, a bath and an office for the chaperone on the first floor.
