CU-Boulder Appoints New Director Of Academic Advising

Elizabeth A. Guertin has been named the director of academic advising and assistant dean for the College of Arts and Sciences at CU-Boulder, pending approval by the Board of Regents. Guertin was serving as director of the University Academic Advising Center and the University Studies Program at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. She will begin her position at CU in mid-June. Guertin will succeed Doris Downey who has been the interim director of academic advising as well as assistant dean in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Race And The Environment Is Topic Of CU-Boulder Conference Sept. 11-12

Dispelling the myth that minorities don't care about protecting the environment is one goal of a Denver conference addressing issues of the environment and race. The Sept. 11-12 conference, sponsored by the Center of the American West at the University of babyÖ±²¥app at Boulder, is expected to attract a sizable audience from many ethnic backgrounds to discuss a broad range of natural resource issues. The keynote speaker will be Robert Stanton, director of the National Park Service and the first African American to hold that position in the agency's 82-year history.

CU Law School Honors Professor With Public Service Award

The University of babyÖ±²¥app School of Law has made Professor Arthur H. Travers Jr. the first recipient of the Clifford J. Calhoun Public Service Award. The $500 award recognizes outstanding contributions made to the law school, the university, and the legal community "which exemplify the spirit and tradition of Professor Calhoun's altruistic career with the School of Law." The award is funded by an endowment from an anonymous donor.

Two CU Engineering Students Named IBM Doctoral Fellows

Two University of babyÖ±²¥app at Boulder doctoral students in the College of Engineering and Applied Science have been awarded 1998-99 IBM Cooperative Fellowships. The fellowships provide the students with a tuition reimbursement, a stipend and the opportunity to gain research and development experience working with industrial scientists at IBM.

CU-Boulder Natural Hazards Researcher Helped Create National Geographic Map

A University of babyÖ±²¥app at Boulder researcher helped National Geographic magazine create a map of natural hazards in North America scheduled to appear in the July issue. Mary Fran Myers, co-director of the Natural Hazards Research and Applications Information Center, coordinated the data on wildfires from the United States, Canada and Mexico.

CU-Boulder To Offer New Degree In Environmental Engineering

Applicants Sought For CU-Boulder High School Honors Institute

The University of babyÖ±²¥app at Boulder College of Engineering and Applied Science is accepting applications for its annual High School Honors Institute to be held on campus Aug. 2 to Aug. 5. The college will accept applications through June 19 from high school juniors with an interest in math, science and engineering. Hands-on sessions for participants will include bridge construction, solar energy projects, aerodynamics experiments and activities covering the principles of space flight, biotechnology, robotics, supercomputers, artificial intelligence and electronic circuitry.

June 13 CU Wizards Show To Explore The Sky And All Of Its Changes

Children will no longer be lost in space after the June 13 CU Wizards science show at the University of babyÖ±²¥app at Boulder. Professor Katy Garmany of astrophysical and planetary sciences will use special effects at Fiske Planetarium for the 10 a.m. Saturday presentation on "Finding Your Way Around the Sky." The one-hour show is intended for children in grades five through nine and is free and open to the public.
