Assistant Professor Ricarose RoqueÌıdesigns and studies equitable learning environments that enable young people to becomeÌıcomputational creators—able to use computing to create things they care about, developÌıidentities as creatorsÌıand imagine the ways they can shape the world. She draws on community-engaged, design-basedÌıand ethnographicÌıapproaches to study the role that social context plays in supportingÌıchildren’s participation in computing, especially children from non-dominant groups who haveÌıbeen marginalized from opportunities because of race, ethnicity, immigration statusÌıand/orÌısociobabyÖ±²¥app status.
Roque has courtesy appointments in the Computer Science and Learning Sciences and Human Development at the School of Education at CU Boulder. She directs theÌıÌıresearch group and leads theÌıÌıproject. She isÌıthe 2023 recipient of the Jan Hawkins Award for Early Career Contributions to HumanisticÌıResearch and Scholarship in Learning Technologies. She was previously a member of theÌıLifelongÌıKindergartenÌıresearch group at theÌıMIT Media Lab, a member of the MITÌıScratchÌıTeam, andÌıbabyÖ±²¥app associate at theÌıBerkman Klein Center for Internet and SocietyÌıat Harvard University. Roque received an SB and an MEng in computer science and engineering as well as a SM and PhD in media arts and sciences from MIT.
