City of Boulder Stormwater Quality Intern
DEPARTMENT: Public Works, Water Quality and Environmental Services (WQES)
SALARY RANGE: $17/hour
HOURS: 10-20 hours per week, flexible during 8 am to 5 pm Monday – Friday workday
START-DATE: January 2019, or as soon as available
END-DATE: May 2019, possibility to extend to Summer
ABOUT US
The City of Boulder Water Quality and Environmental Services (WQES) Group facilitates City compliance programs related to the Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Permit and other city and state water quality regulations. The group conducts project evaluations, monitoring programs, and special studies aimed at maintaining a safe, healthy, and vibrant watershed for the City of Boulder.
OVERALL OBJECTIVE
The City of Boulder has over 900 stormwater control measures (SCMs) that provide flood control and water quality treatment following precipitation. The City is updating its database to track and inspect SCMs. The Stormwater Quality Intern will work with City staff on the following aspects of this project:
- Organize Data: Utilize City permitting software to catalog drainage reports, design plans, and as-built drawings for SCMs.
- Define Attributes: Review cataloged reports and existing SCM database information to create a spreadsheet of SCM attributes for use in City GIS and asset management software.
- Conduct Inspections: Assist City staff with inspecting the condition of SCMs in the field.
- Integrate Findings: Assist City staff to develop procedures for tracking new SCMs and summarizing SCM attributes.
In addition to the above areas, the Stormwater Quality Intern may also assist with related field monitoring, MS4 compliance, and data analysis projects depending on availability and interest.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Pursuing or has recently completed degree in environmental/physical sciences or engineering.
- Ability to read technical reports and synthesize information in a written report.
- Previous data entry and statistical analysis experience using Microsoft Excel.
- Eagerness to learn about and understand components of stormwater control measures.
- Valid driver’s license.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Familiarity with ArcGIS software and basic geoprocessing tools.
- Understanding of stormwater control measure design including detention, water quality capture volume, outlet structure configurations, and green infrastructure approaches.
- Experience with field monitoring including completion of inspection forms.
