Research and Innovation

Maximize impact and entrepreneurship

We protect human health and the natural environment through new knowledge and engineering solutions to issues that impact the biosphere, land, water, and air quality.

Vision

The multi-disciplinary CU Boulder Environmental Engineering Program is recognized internationally for research excellence in diverse areas of environmental engineering and science. Our research leads to new understanding of environmental issues and develops new tools and technologies to protect human health and the environment with a particular focus on sustainable solutions to climate-driven issues.

In the next five years, we will:

  • Be a leading institution in environmental engineering research and innovation, developing and implementing new technologies and methods that protect the environment and promote sustainability.
  • Be a hub for interdisciplinary environmental problem-solving, bringing together experts from a range of fields to tackle the most pressing environmental challenges.

To enable this vision, we will:

  • Lead one or more CEAS interdisciplinary research themes in areas involving engineering solutions for adaptation to and mitigation of the changing climate.
  • Lead initiatives that engage with campus-wide institutes, as measured by publications, grant proposals, co-advised students, etc.
  • Enhance our global reputation by engaging in collaborations, pursuing visiting fellowships, and hosting scholars.
  • Increase research collaborations with the environmental industry, including utilities, regulatory agencies, engineering firms, NGOs, and other partners.

Education

Expand access and opportunity.

In collaboration with alumni and industry, we develop the next generation of environmental problem solvers.

Vision

CU Environmental Engineering is a diverse educational experience, both in community and in program content, that is nationally recognized for its excellence and its large alumni community. The program crosses departments, strengthening and diversifying student experiences at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

In the next five years, we will:

  • Be a top destination for students seeking a rigorous and hands-on education in environmental engineering, providing them with the knowledge and skills they need to make a positive impact in the world.
  • Be a model for sustainable and environmentally focused engineering education, inspiring the next generation of environmental engineers and leaders.
  • Be a hub to connect alumni and students to enhance lifelong learning and professional skills.

To enable this vision, we will:

  • Make PMP more effective by streamlining tracks, improving the administrative structure, adding a graduate laboratory and a class in professional ethics, and developing programs for working professionals.
  • Host meetings/workshops of environmental engineering professionals (including an AEESP workshop) to share best practices in education.
  • Increase the size of the PhD program to 40 by increasing offers and acceptances.
  • Develop forward-looking curriculum that we evaluate on a regular basis with a focus on innovative forward-looking topics including climate/sustainability, ecological engineering, data science, etc.
  • Increase the number of students engaging in experiential learning through internships and research experiences.

Inclusion

Build community through engagement.

We will achieve excellence and leadership by fostering and leveraging the contributions of our diverse community.

Vision

The CU Boulder Environmental Engineering Program has a strong history of diversity and inclusion, where the contributions of all program members are valued and appreciated. We seek to identify and implement improvements, to become even more inclusive, and widely known as a model for engineering programs across the college, state, and country.

In the next five years, we will:

  • Be a leader in promoting diversity and inclusivity in environmental engineering, creating a welcoming and supportive community for all students, staff, and baby直播app, regardless of their background or identity.
  • Be a hub for addressing the environmental concerns of local communities and other external constituents.
  • Be a model for environmental engineering programs everywhere, demonstrating that diversity and inclusivity are essential for success in the field.

To enable this vision, we will:

  • Improve student inclusion (and access to baby直播app) by organizing educational and social activities that promote the use of space in SEEC.
  • Nurture our culture by holding events that celebrate the diversity of the Environmental Engineering Program community.
  • Improve the engagement and retention of diverse students by building community within the first-year cohorts at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Implement strategies to support the success and retention of neurodiverse students, staff, and baby直播app.
  • Identify and celebrate the activities of our baby直播app, staff, and students who address environmental issues in the broader community.
