Nordic Scholarships and Awards

Gunnel Thorsin-Hamm Memorial Scholarship

The Nordic Studies Program invites applications for scholarships to study abroad in Sweden.  Applications will be accepted for students planning to study at Uppsala University or another Swedish university for the academic year, spring or summer semesters. (Preference is given to applications for academic year programs.) Scholarships will be awarded in amounts up to $2,000. The funds for these awards were given by Miles Hamm in memory of his wife, Gunn茅l Thorsin-Hamm, who taught Swedish at CU-Boulder for twenty years until her retirement in 1995.

Deadline for summer, academic year: March 15. 
Deadline for spring: October 15.

To apply, please submit the following to gsll_assist@colorado.edu:

  • letter of application indicating reason for study at the chosen program, description of Nordic Studies coursework, involvement in Nordic Studies or Club activities
  • current, unofficial transcript
  • evidence of acceptance into a Study Abroad program in Sweden
  • budget of all anticipated expenses, including tuition and fees
  • brochure or other equivalent information on the course and program (including dates, location, prerequisites, etc.) if not applying through CU Study Abroad.

A $2000 annual award to broaden and deepen the applicant鈥檚 knowledge of any of the following areas: the Swedish Language and Literature, Swedish History and Culture (including Arts and Crafts, Architecture, Theatre, Music, etc.) or in Swedish Social Studies (Swedish Women鈥檚 Studies, Swedish Health Care or Sustainability, etc.) at a recognized school or higher institution of learning.

Deadline: February 28.

The Nordic Studies Program, in collaboration with the Denver chapter of the Swedish Women's Educational Association (SWEA), invites applications for scholarships to fund external studies in Swedish. Applications will be accepted for students planning to study Swedish language at any level through online courses, immersion camps, or courses at another university. Scholarships will be awarded in amounts up to $1000.
