What does inclusivity look like at the College of Music today? What are the college鈥檚 DEI鈥攄iversity, equity and inclusion鈥攇oals going forward? We鈥檙e making strides, but we know we must do more.

In this edition of the Dean鈥檚 Downbeat, Dean John Davis shares highlights from recent College of Music activities and accomplishments, including his perspective on the significance of our 2023 Annual Distinguished Lectureship: 鈥淭he research and lived experiences of trailblazers like Andr茅 de Quadros ignite understanding of this current moment in American and world history鈥攁nd how diverse, creative communities can help shape, sustain and support a democracy that ensures justice and liberty for everyone.鈥�

Our world music ensembles mark three decades of exploring artistic identity, intercultural collaboration, global pedagogy and multidisciplinary approaches to music-making at the College of Music.

For undergraduate and graduate students, a new biannual award celebrates the works and legacy of late composer Alex Craig.

On Feb. 26, undergraduate pianist Jude Dow-Hygelund and graduate soprano Dawna Rae Warren were awarded first prizes in the College of Music鈥檚 annual Honors Competition. Congratulations to all participating student competitors and collaborative pianists!

For first-year PhD student Laura Klein, a visit to Jane Austen鈥檚 House in Chawton, Hampshire, inspired 鈥淭he Jane Austen Playlist: Love and Music of Regency England.鈥� On Feb. 25, Klein will capture the essence of Austen鈥檚 six major novels in a dramatized performance.
