Jennifer Shannon, associate professor of听anthropology and curator at the CU Museum听of Natural History, has won a Whiting Public听Engagement Program fellowship, a major grant听for her work chronicling Indigenous history in听comic books.
The $50,000 fellowship will support Kumeyaay听Comics: Indigenous Histories of California, a听project that builds on the success of Shannon鈥檚听NAGPRA Comics.
The aim of NAGPRA Comics, which was听launched in 2017 with archaeologist Sonya听Atalay (Anishinaabe-Ojibwe) and archaeologist听and comics creator John Swogger, is to tell true听stories about repatriation from Native nations鈥櫶齪erspectives.
Taking its name from the federal Native听American Graves Protection and Repatriation听Act (NAGPRA) of 1990, the series helps Native听peoples, museum professionals, university听students and others understand both the听obligations and impact of the legislation,听Shannon said.
