Inside the Greenhouse; NEST Studio for the Arts
A group of 11 high school students in STEM听(science, technology, engineering and math)听spent their summer observing birds interacting听with the environment through the guided arts听and sciences approach of the Side by Side听project.
The outreach project was created by Beth听Osnes, associate professor in theatre, and听Rebecca Safran, associate professor in ecology听and evolutionary biology, for underserved听female-identifying or nonbinary students.听Osnes and Safran hope that educating and听empowering these students in STEM fields and听in the arts will diversify approaches, perspectives听and solutions to environmental challenges.听
The youth partnered with scientists, artists and听CU Boulder graduate students who guided听them through observations of the natural听world. Journal notes and sketches from their听time spent in the field were developed into a听script for a public performance.
