3 practices to help you prepare for the end of the semester

Devin Cramer
Fall break is almost here and the finish line is in sight. With about a month left of the semester, there’s still plenty of time to finish strong.

Over these next few weeks, I encourage you to get organized and set some strategies to get through the rest of the semester. Here are some things to try.

Ask for help

If you’re struggling with something, seek out help and take advantage of campus resources. This could include struggling to understand a concept, complete a group project or get started on a final paper. Asking for help is not always easy but if we can take that first step in finding support, it can make a difference and help the rest of your semester be a positive experience.

Visit your instructors’ office hours to ask questions and get support. And check out free academic resources like the Writing Center, University Libraries or Academic Success and Achievement Program (ASAP) to help you prepare for finals. If you’re experiencing conflict with classmates around a group project, review these tips to help manage disagreements and difficult conversations. The more we ask for help when we need it, the easier it can become.

Check in with yourself

When things feel overwhelming, pause and take a few moments to think about how you’re feeling and what you may need. Sometimes this can be easier if you write things down or talk it out with a trusted friend or family member.

Needs you may identify could relate to academic support with finals coming up. Other things may include seeking support with health and wellness, resolving roommate conflict, finding a summer job or other needs. Clearly identifying these areas can help you figure out your next step.

Stay connected

The end of the semester may seem like a busy time, but I encourage you to stay connected with your friends and family. Whether you need to take a study break, are seeking advice or just need to vent, reaching out to those in your support network can help when things feel stressful.

Whether you’re staying in Boulder or traveling next week for fall break, I hope you’re able to relax and enjoy this time before finals. Good luck, Buffs—you got this!
