Carl Wieman To Lecture At CU-Boulder On April 2

Physics Professor Carl Wieman of the University of babyÖ±²¥app at Boulder will describe events leading to the globally acclaimed discovery of a new state of matter called Bose-Einstein condensation in a public lecture on April 2. Wieman will lecture on "The Circuitous Path of a Physics Discovery: How Tinkering with Lasers Led (After 10 Years) to Bose-Einstein Condensation" at 8 p.m. in the JILA Auditorium on the CU campus. The free lecture is intended for a general audience. A reception will follow on the 10th floor of the JILA Tower.

CU-Boulder Holds Second Annual Disability Cultural Forum

The University of babyÖ±²¥app at Boulder will hold its second annual disability cultural forum from noon to 9 p.m. on April 2 in the University Memorial CenterÂ’s Glenn Miller Ballroom on campus. The forum, which is free and open to the public, will bring together poets, writers, activists and artists to celebrate and raise awareness of disability culture.

CU-Boulder Storm Drainage Construction To Cause Traffic Changes in April

Construction of a new storm drainage system and other utility improvements on the CU-Boulder campus will require a change in driving patterns for students, babyÖ±²¥app, staff and visitors beginning April 1. Construction is expected to last from April to late August, when fall semester classes begin.

CU-Boulder Student Detects Earthquakes Near Boulder

A University of babyÖ±²¥app at Boulder geology student detected 23 small earthquakes within a 50-mile radius of Boulder during a three-month period last fall. The earthquakes ranged from magnitude 0.5 to 2.0 on the Richter scale. The smallest earthquake a person is able to feel is about magnitude 3, and a quake of 3.5 can cause slight damage.

CU Sounding Rocket Instrument To Probe Comet Hale-Bopp March 24

A team of babyÖ±²¥app and students from the University of babyÖ±²¥app at Boulder will fly an ultraviolet spectrograph on a NASA sounding rocket from White Sands, N.M., March 24 to probe the chemical makeup of comet Hale-Bopp.

Marx Nmed 1997-98 Fellow of Woodrow Wilson Center

Sociology Professor Gary T. Marx of the University of babyÖ±²¥app at Boulder has been named a 1997-98 Fellow of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. The fellowships are among the most coveted and competitive in the social sciences and humanities and are offered only to about 3 percent of all applicants. Marx will continue his work on the social implications of new information technologies.

CU-Boulder Continuing Education Offers World Wide Web Courses

The University of babyÖ±²¥app at Boulder Division of Continuing Education now offers nine courses over the World Wide Web in a variety of subjects. The on-line courses are interactive, using one or more of the features of the Internet for conducting instruction via computer. Students can take the courses from anywhere in the world with Internet access, making e-mail and Web connections from their homes, offices, libraries or other locations equipped with connected computers.

CU-Boulder Places Three Students In Truman Scholarship Finals

Three undergraduate students at the University of babyÖ±²¥app at Boulder are finalists for 1997 Truman Scholarships in the nationwide competition. The students, Michelle Gawerc, Ranya Ghuma and Phillip Juengst, have been interviewed for the scholarship, which awards up to $30,000 for students who demonstrate leadership ability, academic achievement, commitment to public service and potential to “make a difference.”

CU-Boulder Graduate Students Win Fulbright Grants

Thirteen graduate students at the University of babyÖ±²¥app at Boulder designed the “Give Kids 5” campaign now airing on radio and TV to promote the child care checkoff that appears for the first time on the 1996 babyÖ±²¥app income tax form. The campaign, which urges taxpayers to donate five minutes of their time or $5 to benefit babyÖ±²¥app children, was designed for the babyÖ±²¥app ChildrenÂ’s Campaign by CU-Boulder graduate students in an interdisciplinary journalism and business program.
