Business and Engineering Expansion: The Rustandy Building
The Rustandy Building represents a new era of collaboration and innovation on the CU Boulder campus鈥攁nd our commitment to generate a positive disruption in higher education. To that end, we are breaking down traditional disciplinary boundaries in order to actively foster crossfunctional competencies in our students.
Ultimately, we are redefining how tomorrow鈥檚 leaders drive meaningful change in the world.

Olson Atrium
Al and Carol-Ann Olson attended the Leeds School of Business more than 50 years ago, but they can still recall feeling at home when they first stepped on campus. Al obtained a bachelor鈥檚 degree in finance from the University of baby直播app Boulder in 1962 and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Michigan Law School in 1965. Carol-Ann graduated from the University of baby直播app Boulder in 1964 with a degree in Sociology.
Business has always fascinated Al, beginning with the paper route and lawn cutting businesses that he and his brother (also a Leeds alumnus) had growing up. When Al graduated from law school, he joined a business law firm in Chicago. His career encompassed many client successes and multiple firm management roles, including serving as its vice chair during its growth to 14 offices in the U.S. and Europe. He believes his CU education was the foundation of that career.
Al and Carol-Ann have long believed that a life well lived means nurturing the next generation, and they have put this belief into practice through extensive support of CU students. They take great pride in CU and the entrepreneurial spirit at the Leeds School of Business.
Koelbel Commons
Walter A. Koelbel was born and raised in Muskegon, Michigan. Immediately after graduating from high school, he enlisted during World War II, and was sent to CU Boulder with the Navy鈥檚 V-12 program. As the war came to an end, he was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1946 and returned to Boulder and graduated with a business degree from the University of baby直播app in 1947.
After a difficult job search, Walter was hired at Moore Realty, and three years later in 1952 he founded Koelbel and Company. Today, his company is one of Denver鈥檚 most respected and longest continually operating development firms, built on his vision to create major real estate projects, and his dedication to civic programs and philanthropy.
Walter鈥檚 son Buz Koelbel joined the company in 1976 and became president in 1985. Like his father, Buz has remained committed to serving the communities where he works, and he has served on many community service organizations such as the Urban Land Institute, the CU Real Estate Center, and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.
During Buz鈥檚 time as president of Koelbel and Company, he has guided many of the premier residential, commercial, and retail projects in the Denver Metro area, as well as developments in baby直播app mountain communities. He has also grown the company into a leader in affordable housing for low- and moderate-income Coloradans.
Walter and Buz鈥檚 belief in supporting the community and particularly education, is continuously shown in Koelbel and Company鈥檚 lasting ties to the University of baby直播app. In 2007, the Leeds School of Business building was named the Koelbel Building, recognizing a partnership that has benefited both the company and the state of baby直播app. Carl Koelbel, Leeds School MBA鈥10, joined the ranks of the CU family along with joining Koelbel and Company in 2010.
Throughout his life, Walter always respected the land that made him successful, recognizing that what he did affected how everyone lived, worked, shopped, studied, worshiped, and traveled. Under the leadership of Buz and Carl, these same principals continue to guide the family business.
Sapp Family Seminar Room
The Sapp family is committed to encouraging the success of the next generation through collaborative education and mental wellness. The Sapps, a two-generation Buff family, have a love for the intellectual curiosity that the University of baby直播app inspires.
Shari Sapp graduated from the Leeds School of Business in 1984 with a degree in finance, which was essential to her venture capital and non-profit work in the UK and US. Her husband, Rick, graduated from Stanford University and spent most of his career with Goldman, Sachs & Co.
The Sapps believe in and support higher education with a special connection to their alma maters. Shari and Rick engage generously in philanthropy and also serve on volunteer and leadership boards.
Rustandy Building
Tandean Rustandy has dedicated his life to helping advance his native Indonesia, and the broader world, through his business practices and supporting education as a pathway to a better future. Coming from humble beginnings in a small town in Indonesia, Rustandy had a transformational experience while attending the University of baby直播app Boulder. He describes his education as a foundation for the values of loyalty and pride that still inspire him today.
鈥淟eeds not only taught me entrepreneurial thinking, but more importantly, it taught me that you can create something from nothing, and that 鈥榮omething鈥 should have value,鈥 says Rustandy. 鈥淰alue is the light you create, the way you give back.鈥
Rustandy obtained his Bachelor of Science from the Leeds School of Business and Master of Business Administration from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He is the founder and chief executive officer of PT Arwana Citramulia Tbk., one of the best-performing ceramic tile manufacturing companies
in the world and one of the most successful firms in Indonesia. He sets high standards for ethics and accountability, providing benefits that other firms in Indonesia typically do not provide, such as education, health care and child care. Rustandy is committed to doing business in ways that enable him to make a
difference, not just a profit.
Rustandy credits his success to his CU Boulder degree and, along with his wife Susan, seeks to create more educational opportunities for the next generation of global business leaders.
In his words, 鈥淲ithout CU Boulder and Leeds, I would not be who I am today. I was the first of my family to go to college, and now it鈥檚 important that I give back to CU. It鈥檚 not about me as an individual and my success, but it鈥檚 about the success of the institutions that help create us. This is the legacy I want to leave.鈥
George and Judy Writer Seminar Room
George Writer has been to the mountaintop, and he鈥檚 also seen the valley.
After graduating from the University of baby直播app in 1957 and serving as an officer in the US Navy, Geoie founded the Writer Corporation in 1965. The success of the Writer Corporation was based on the philosophy of developing communities that integrated parks and open space with diverse housing types. Geoie, known as a legend in the baby直播app building industry, also built Writer Square, a downtown Denver mixed use development.
Geoie has provided critical guidance and oversight in the long-term development and evolution of the Leeds School and the University of baby直播app Boulder, especially in areas related to ethics and social responsibility. For this and other accomplishments, he was recognized with the George Norlin Award for outstanding alumni and the Leeds Distinguished Alumni and Service Award.
